Great video...It's too bad that Nas is a part of that media conglomerate that he is criticizing...I don't want to get too cynical, but I can't help it. The record label that he is on, Island/DefJam is part of the massive media conglomerate, Vivendi Universal (about as scary as Viacom), who, in their massive holdings, own several Fox entertainment networks... So, he ought to know that the type of media networking that he's criticizing is the same type of media networking that is cashing in on his popular message and record sales...
too bad "destroy and rebuild" is the same motto the Bush administration has for Iraq. I love the idea that we keep fighting fire with fire ... or is it ignorance with ignorance?
too bad, too bad, too bad :) Though Nas is part of another large media conglomerate (good luck trying to be a major hip-hop artist and NOT be), i think this video does a great job at attacking fox's biased journalism and racism. i don't think his emphasis is just on Fox being an evil corporation owned by an even larger evil corporation, but on their blatantly racist attacks. An ad hominem against Nas doesn't really say much about the content of the video. That's like people who dismissed 'An Inconvenient Truth' because of Al Gore's personal practices. Please don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to defend his affiliation with Vivendi, i just don't think it somehow makes the video irrelevant. It's hard to be a purist in this crazy world. i don't think it's ignorant to think we need to destroy and rebuild the structure of the media. It would probably be ignorant to bomb and physically destroy their buildings. But, as far as i'm concerned, down with Fox News. Then again, who would i get to make fun of?
That's not his point at all.
He's obviously talking about destroying the media's influence over our lives and rebuilding it with independent stories of citizens --- stories that reflect our lives. A great example of this, in my mind, is the videos that leaked from Burma (i'll call it Myanmar once they get a new government that's worth responding to in ANY way). Blogging, i think, may have this potential. Maybe. So, though he uses the ironic phrase "destroy and rebuild", i think he's really talking about a radical transformation of the way media affects us. In essence, the media is US.
i totally agree with you Torben...and like i said, I really do think it's a great video/great message. I just thought it to be a little self-defeating and embarrassing when coming through the same channels being criticized, that's all. there are plenty of alternatives for Nas...especially given his notoriety...he could easily start his own label with his bank account and record sales history.
this brings me to your comment about not having much of a chance to be a major hip-hop artist without being on a major media conglomerate ...there are plenty of indie hip-hop labels that keep solid ethics and still sell hundreds of thousands (sometimes millions) of records (def jux for one). i know a handful of indie/punk/hardcore labels that are still alive, still independent, who keep the kind of ethics they believe in, and (sometimes) outsell major labels. but one may not be able to become some massive super star that way, yet...but who wants that?
in my mind, becoming that, especially on a major media conglomerate is completely antithetical to the subversive/revolutionary roots and independent/self-reliant spirit of hip-hop (and indie/punk/hardcore for that matter)...

I still disagree with the rhetoric of "destroy and rebuild" - whatever you say about the undertones of his attacks on Fox. It just seems like the same imperialist, there can only be one "right" voice, coming from the opposition to Fox. Can't we come up with a more intelligent way to criticize Fox than using violence and aggression, even if it's directed metaphorically through the actual technological entities which translate the discourse?

interesting point, el...although he is trying to subvert and use the destroy/rebuild against Fox, I think you're right, maybe he is repeating the same mistake in some ways...
