The inadequate image epidemic

My close friend Travis sent the following expert to me via e-mail today. What a wonderful section! This passage comes from one in a series of interviews in the book Herzog on Herzog. Do you have an ideology? Something that drives you beyond mere storytelling?

Well, I would have to say that 'mere' storytelling, as you call it, is good enough for a film. When I sit down to write a script I never attempt to articulate my ideas in abstract terms through the veil of an ideology. My films come to me very much alive, like dreams without logical patterns or academic explanations. I will have a basic idea for a film and then over a period of time, when maybe I am driving or walking, it becomes clearer and clearer to me. I see the film before me, as if I were in a cinema. Soon it is so perfectly transparent that I can sit and write it all down. It is as if I were copying from a movie screen. I like to write fast because it gives the story a certain urgency. I leave out all unnecessary things and just go for it. A story written this way will have, for me at least, much more coherence and drive. And it will also be full of life. For these reasons it has never taken me longer than four or five days to write a script. I just sit in front of the typewriter or computer and pound the keys.

Whether I have an ideology is not something that I have ever given much thought to, though I do understand where the question might come from. People generally sense I am very well-oriented and know where I have come from, where I am standing now and where I am going. But it is not an ideology as most people think of the term. It is just that I understand the world in my own way and am capable of articulating this understanding into stories and images that seem to be coherent to others. Even after watching my films, it bothers some people that they still cannot put their finger on what my ideology might be. Please, take what I'm saying with a pair of pliers, but let me tell you: the ideology is simply the films themselves and my ability to make them. This is what scares those people who try so hard to analyze and criticize me and my work. I do not like to drop names, but what sort of an ideology would you push under the shirt of Conrad or Hemingway or Kafka? Goya or Caspar David Friedrich?

I have often spoken of what I call the inadequate imagery of today's civilization. I have the impression that the images that surround us today are worn out; they are abused and useless and exhausted. They are limping and dragging themselves behind the rest of our cultural evolution. When I look at the postcards in tourist shops and the images and advertisements that surround us in magazines, or I turn on the television, or if I walk into a travel agency and see those huge posters with that same tedious image of the Grand Canyon on them, I truly feel there is something dangerous emerging here. The biggest danger, in my opinion, is television because to a certain degree it ruins our vision and makes us very sad and lonesome. Our grandchildren will blame us for not having tossed hand-grenades into TV stations because of commercials. Television kills our imagination and what we end up with are worn-out images because of the inability of too many people to seek out fresh ones.

As a race we have become aware of certain dangers that surround us. We comprehend, for example, that nuclear power is a real danger for mankind, that over-crowding of the planet is the greatest of all. We have understood that the destruction of the environment is another enormous danger. But I truly believe that the lack of adequate imagery is a danger of the same magnitude. It is as serious a defect as being without a memory. What have we done to our images? What have we done to our embarrassed landscapes? I have said this before and will repeat it again as long as I am able to talk: if we don not develop adequate images we will die out like dinosaurs. Look at the depiction of Jesus in our iconography, unchanged since the vanilla ice-cream kitsch of the Nazarene school of painting in the late nineteenth century. These images alone are sufficient proof that Christianity is moribund. We need images in accordance with our civilization and our innermost conditioning, and this is the reason why I like an film that searches for new images no matter in what direction it moves or what story it tells. One must dig like an archaeologist and search our violated landscapes to find anything new.

R.I.P. Bruce Conner

Bruce Conner passed away today at age 74 of natural causes. My friend Travis already posted a great article about Conner's death here and a post full of great links and information here, so i'll just add a few of my thoughts to his. i was introduced to Bruce Conner roughly two years ago while taking a class on beat art at UVU. As an aspiring filmmaker, it's easy to say that i've been most captivated by his incredibly spliced and innovative independent films. i have a few of his rare films, treasures that i present to house guests as a sort of initiation --- a sign of my confidence (and, i supposed, hope) in them. i show these films with eagerness, reminiscent of my desire to share scripture passages with friends when i first turned away from drugs and my old lifestyle. Of course, as i learned with my sometimes overbearing approach to sharing knowledge i'd gained, what changes your life doesn't universally transform the hearts of everyone. The process of exchange can be laborious and frustrating, often lacking reciprocity. Some of my friends have watched his films and walked away as if they'd just seen a reality tv show. Others, such as my wife, become instant enthusiasts and understand, almost intuitively, what makes his films so great. i am thankful for his vision and creativity that has profoundly impacted the way i view film and art. i encourage you all to delve into his work. i've only spoken briefly about his films. He has a large body of work that stretches over many mediums and many years. If you live close to me, stop by and we'll relax, turn the TV on, pop my DVDs in, and dig on some Bruce Conner together. That's how artists stay alive. Art derives and is ultimately retained and preserved in the memory.

Clean Flicks

Today, my friend's Andrew and Josh were on the front page of The Daily Herald for their upcoming film on Clean Flicks. i'm excited to see it. i worked with Andrew on his film, which won the Special Jury Award a few months ago at Cinequest Film Festival, Una Vida Mejor. Andrew, my wife, and i also directed Wrestling With God: A Three-Way Conversation on Mormonism together. Next, after i finish working on The Sonosopher and he finishes filming the Clean Flicks doc, we're going to co-write a screenplay. i'm glad to see that they are getting press. i've seen some of their footage, and i think this is going to be an interesting film.

Review of My Film, Wrestling With God

"Wrestling with God" is one of the reasons I go to a film festival. This 22-minute "conversational drama" was not your typical movie, and I applaud its three producers and three actors for having the guts to do something completely outside the mold but inside the heart of Mormonism. (Pictured here is one of the actors, Niki Nielsen). As the producers/directors explained it afterwards, the origin of the film was a deep conversation they'd had about what it means to live the Mormon faith. Someone had the presence of mind to make a recording of this (which was then transcribed into a draft of the screenplay). Whoa! All I can say is that I'd love to have these people over to chat at my house!

This film is what I would call an intellectual-spiritual feast. A sort of Mormon My Dinner with Andre, this film is not for those seeking spectacle (or even a simple plot). It's a conversation--how boring! But it certainly was not so for anyone who takes seriously not just Mormonism but the paradoxes that Mormons live within--especially obedience and agency. One man took the role of the faithful member, another, the role of an insistent but respectful doubter. The woman played something of a mediator. One of the very interesting discussion points was the issue of "cafeteria Mormonism": to what extent does our personal agency in living gospel principles become a pick-and-choose dodge from real commitment?

What might have been an overly cerebral discussion--approximating those more-heat-than-light discussions that can happen in some academic settings regarding Mormonism--was rescued by the intervention of two very timely personal anecdotes recounted by the first (orthodox) man and at the end by the woman. When pushed by the nonbeliever/fence sitter, the more orthodox man (who was bearded, adding a nice irony in playing against type) told a story (based on real events) about a miraculous intervention that saved a family member's life after an accident. One can argue inconsitencies or problems with the Mormon faith, culture, or church, but such potent experiences tend to confirm spiritual realities that trump doubts.

The second story, told by the female character at the film's close, provided a beautiful allegory that (beautifully) went uninterpreted. A baby at church in the almost-walking stage leaves his bench and ventures down the aisle, only to trip and nearly bang his head. But rescued in time by a perceptive member sitting on the aisle, the baby grows bold again to take another step, and then proceeds to make the same stumble-and-rescue progress down the aisle, aided by the members along the way. That sat really well with me. Not only is this a metaphor for mortality and the fall, but it invokes the way God's grace is woven into our lives through the timely interventions of our neighbors in the faith. We sometimes don't even realize how many "saints along the aisles" have guided our steps and redeemed our missteps as we bumble onward.

There was a simple piety to this conversation which rescued it from being a show-off piece for brainy Mormons. A believing sensibility undergirded it, and I went away edified. Thanks to Beachfire Pictures and to Andrew James, Torben Bernhard, and Marissa Bernhard for giving some substance to the festival in a surprising and effective manner. Could this be the launch of a new sub-genre of Mormon film? I only hope their imitators will do as well as these trailblazers.

Una Vida Mejor

Here is the first trailer for the film that Marissa and I worked on as editing supervisors, associate producers, and boom operators. The film has been submitted to thirteen film festivals so far. Check it out!

The Shock Doctrine

This video is interesting to me on a few different levels: One, I'm interested in the ideas contained in the video and, more specifically, in the book. Two, I'm fascinated by the idea of short documentaries to introduce books (this has amazing implications). Is this the way to reach people who need motivation to read? Three, it's amazing to me that Alfonso Cuaron put together this video (the director of Children of Men, Harry Potter 3, Solo Con Tu Pareja, etc). What an interesting way to communicate such important ideas!

Beginning its second year, the Utah Valley International Cinema is cordially inviting students to attend free monthly screenings of foreign films.

Sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa and Reel Film Series, UVIC's primary purpose is to enable students to experience and enjoy international cinema.

Torben Bernhard, the president of UVIC, explained his motivation for launching the program: "At the time I started the cinema, I was probably watching five to 10 foreign films per week. I suppose I initially just wanted people to see the beautiful things I was seeing, and experience the films in the same way I was experiencing them."

Bernhard said that foreign films have a way of transporting us to a new culture that we know nothing about.

Ingmar Bergman, the dark arthouse director considered by many fans to have been the greatest film-maker ever, has died at the age of 89.

Bergman died early this morning at his home on the tiny Baltic island of Faaro, near Gotland. No cause of death was immediately given, but his daughter, Eva, said that he had passed away "peacefully".

Bergman made about 60 movies before retiring from film-making in 2003, including The Seventh Seal (1957), Winter Light (1963) and Fanny and Alexander (1982), which won four Oscars, including for Best Foreign Language Film.
